Just an aside on allergies. As a child I suffered supremely from allergies, particularly allergies to animal dander. It still bothers me somewhat, but incredibly, since going vegan, I can’t remember the last time I needed an antihistamine. I think, going off all animal products has sharply reduced the level of inflammation. I recommend a look at Dr. Michael Greger’s website blogs and videos, many of which can explain, I believe, the basis of this phenomenon. Good luck with Maverick!
I really enjoyed your article, John. I am aware that through living overseas and teaching in various international schools, I have developed empathy and formed meaningful relationships with people who are different from me. I’m so grateful for the perspective, beauty, and wisdom my friends bring to my life. Whenever I visit America, I see people are more divided than ever, and it is so sad. Thanks for clearly explaining the importance of exposure and developing empathy. Also, as a dog mom who actually used to be very afraid of dogs, I really love that you are now willing to let your kids have one! By the way, poodles are hypoallergenic and are great family dogs. We have a teddy poodle named Suki. ❤️
Thanks for all of this! I think people with international experience (or who have meaningfully engaged with immigrant communities here in the United States) have often learned these skills in very deep ways.

Thanks for another thoughtful article and two amazing pictures, John. I knew you would come to love Mav!
