The observation that we assume every good practice must scale before it becomes legitimate stopped me cold. A serious reading group does not need a billion dollars, a communications department, and a three-day strategic retreat to become real. Institutions should serve the good they were built to protect—not quietly replace it.
While universities are obviously good at teaching some skills that can't be learnt through self studies (such as medicine or engineering), it's more rare that I meet people who become intellectuals there.
Doggone it, John! I already have more books than I can read in this lifetime, and here you go again! Another “must read” which happens, not incidentally, to delve into why there ARE must reads.

Finding intellectual life outside of the university may become an even more prevalent desire given the advent of AI
