An Evening Dialogue with Gary Haugen
The founder of the International Justice Mission is coming to St. Louis
Gary Haugen will join me for a conversation about law, justice, vocation, and Christianity in Emerson auditorium at Washington University on Thursday evening, May 1. The event is free, open to the public, and (for you Missouri-licensed attorneys) CLE eligible. You can learn more and RSVP here.
Gary is the CEO and founder of the International Justice Mission, a global organization that combats sex trafficking, child sexual exploitation, cybersex trafficking, forced labor, slavery, property grabbing, and police abuse of power. Before founding IJM in 1997, Gary served as a human rights attorney for the U.S. Department of Justice and the Director of the United Nations’ investigation on the Rwandan genocide. He is a graduate of Harvard College and the University of Chicago School of Law.
I’ll be dialoguing with Gary about parts of his journey, his work at IJM, and the ways he brings his Christian faith into his work and life. Gary’s visit is hosted by the Legal Vocation Fellowship, an organization I founded two years ago that seeks to shape the next generation of Christian lawyers through formation and mentoring of early-career attorneys in relationally-based cohort models. Our second cohort now underway includes thirty fellows from seven regions: Chicago, Houston, Minneapolis, New York City, San Francisco, St. Louis, and Washington, D.C.
My conversation with Gary will be part of a three-day conference with our LVF fellows in St. Louis that includes classroom instruction on the intersection of law and theology, small group discussions, and social time, including a trip to Busch Stadium to watch the Cardinals take on the Mets. Joining me to help lead the instructional time are my friends and colleagues Rick Garnett (Notre Dame Law School), Jennifer Koh (Pepperdine Law School), Ruth Okediji (Harvard Law School), Lisa Schiltz (University of St. Thomas Law School), and David Skeel (University of Pennsylvania School).
You can learn more about the Legal Vocation Fellowship on our website or in this post about our inaugural conference in 2023.
